Objecs : To assess the injluences of two oriental herbs, Sinomenii caulis and Hoelen, on the levels of blood glucose, the effects of the herbs on the hyperglycemia, hyperlipidemia and diabetes were examined in rats.
Methods : Hyperglycemia and hyperlipidemia were induced by fructose-rich diet or cholesterol-rich diet in rats, each others. And to assess the effects of the herbs on diabetes, glucose tolerance test was performed on the diabetic rats induced with wtreptozotocin (STZ) or alloxan.
Results and Conclusion : Two kinds of decoction, which was prepared form Sinomenii caulis or Hoelen, decreased the levels of blood glucose in the hyperglycemic rats and in the hyperlipidemic rats. And Sinomenii caulis had some diminishable effects on the glucose tolerance in non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) rats induced by alloxan, but had no effects in NIDDM rats induced by streptozotocin. Hoelen had no effects on glucose tolerance in both types of NIDDM rats described above. These results suggested that Sinomenii caulis and Hoelen had some decreasing effects on the levels of blood glucose in the hyperhlycemic and hyperlipidemic rat, but the effects was not dependent on insulin secretions.
